4 Challenges Unique to Tile Roofs and Its Installation

When it comes to roof replacement projects, you’ll be pleased to learn from your roofer that you have a wide range of options when it comes to materials. You are after all more than free to choose materials such as asphalt shingles, wood shakes, or even tile for your roofing system. When it comes to tile roofs, however, experts recommend that you learn as much as you can about the material as it comes with a few unique challenges, such as:

1. Not Every Clay Tile is Durable - Believe it or not, not all clay tiles were created equal as experts say that some of the clay tiles they’ve investigated were ruined by frost damage not long after they were installed. Therefore, when you’re purchasing tiles for your roofing system, be sure to properly conduct your research and only buy tiles that have a successful track record in the climate where you intend to have them installed.

2. It Needs a Layer of Self-Adhered Waterproofing Membrane - While it’s true that every roofing system has an underlayment, clay tiles are more reliable against water infiltration if it has a layer of self-adhered waterproofing membrane attached to it. This is because by having your roofing inspections and replacement expert install this type of underlayment for your tile roof, you can prevent windblown rains from infiltrating your roof and seal the roof fasteners at the same time.

3. It Can Generate Chatter - When you’re installing tile roofs for your home, it’s vital that the tile is properly attached to the roof deck to prevent wind uplift. This is because if it isn’t installed properly, it can generate “chatter”, also known as the noise caused by tiles rattling against one another due to strong winds. Therefore, if you’re installing clay tiles as your roof, be sure to use corrosion-resistant copper or stainless steel nails for the roof perimeters and nose clips to restrain the tiles’ front edge.

4. Its Gutters and Flashing Should Be Made From Copper or Stainless Steel - If you intend to install clay tiles as your roof, keep in mind that its gutters and flashing must be made from copper or stainless steel instead of aluminum or sheet metal. This is because clay tiles have a long lifespan and it’s always best that the materials attached to it last for the same length of time as well.
